New Motoring License Requirement Grievous Imposition to Ypsilanti's Elite

Just between you and me, Mrs. VanSchmildebank's soiree wasn't quite...correct...was it? Poor dear, and she tries so hard. And all that jewelry! I heard Miss Swanabout say that no one in New York wears anything like that.

She's nouveau riche, dear--she just doesn't know any better. Nothing like your reception last month. Simply divine. And your new Rolls is magnificent!

Oh, that reminds me, dear, I had to get one of those new Michigan Driver's Licenses.

A license?

Yes, it's a new requirement for 1919. And you wouldn't believe it, the grubby little clerk in the office there actually had the nerve to ask my age! And--my weight! Can you imagine? Just some...common bookkeeper! I simply MUST tell the editor of the paper about this! Pass me a cucumber sandwich, dear.

  1. I just had an idea. Wouldn't it be cool if the legislators TODAY belonged to the working class? I'd dig it.

  2. James, dear, please! Have some compassion!

Apparently EW's have existed in every age...

  3. I know that I always feel a little timid and backward when I have to go to the Secretary of State's office.

  4. Sandy D: Hi! Welcome to the blog! Oh, me too; it's dreadful. The last time I was there I had the wrong paper and my stress level rose faster than a hot-air balloon. But at least I didn't mind that they knew my weight and real age.

Makes you wonder if we as a society have less personal privacy in general now than in 1919.

  5. Teacher Patti: I definitely agree. Story on NPR just said the average legislator's salary is $80,000.

  6. I also happened to notice the other day that the signs around the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market state that it was founded in 1919. So maybe, that is one of the places that Carrie drove to with her new motor license.
