Wednesday Mystery Spot: Stumped Us All

Yep, stumped me too. The picture a reader sent in is, as he says, "It's the extreme eastern edge of the area either known as Waterworks park, or, the City's composting site - whichever you prefer." Ohhhh. I've seen the big piles of stuff in the composting site, (and a few mysterious bricks that may be from the old water works), but I didn't go to the rivers' edge that day!
The reader also sent in a photo with a wider view that includes the Factory St. Bridge. The view is from the waterside eastern edge of Waterworks Park looking southish.
He adds, "Not sure what the history of the spot is, though some readers might know. I assume the area's that way because of the former site of the "water works"."

The laurels of victory go to this kind reader, who did indeed stump us all!

So. Naturally I wanted to do as well as the reader did, and looked until I found this photo. Can you hazard a guess where within the City limits this is? Answer next Wednesday!

  1. I partly picked this photo because it so charmed me.

Someone made a li'l extension on the end of the Really Big Slide; can you see it? I guess kids were hurtling off too fast into the dirt.

It also reminded me that the glory days of Really Big Slides are sadly over. Can you imagine a big ol' slide like this one, with naught but a ladder leading up to it, in a modern-day playground? There were a couple of Really Big Slides in my childhood, so...I'm a little verklempt here...

I also like the child who climbed up the giant ladder that is attached elsewhere on the swings (they didn't have "play structures" back then, thankfully). This ladder leads to nothing--it's just there. The kid has parked himself in the top of it, staring at the camera. It's the kind of random kid thing to do that modern childhoods completely lack.

I think childhoods should have giant ladders attached to swingsets for no apparent reason and kids who climb up 'em and just sit at the top for awhile.

And Really Big Slides. And random gliders going overhead.

  2. I'm going with my gut on this one - that is a view of what is now Recreation Park. If I'm correct, it was the curving track in the background that gave it away,

  4. No, I'm gonna guess Peninsular Park. That receding V of treeline makes me think of a riverside location.

We had a great slide like that in Edith Hefley park when my daughter was a child. Our great old pooch used to climb right up there after her, trying to keep her little feet on the ground. She would have been a great agility dog.

  5. Hmmm...this location is closer to your house, dear Lisele, than Peninsular Park.....

  6. It might even be the same slide as the one formerly in Edith Hefley park....

  7. Hm. That I don't know Building Place...but I DO know that you were this week's winner! Yay! Another challenge is posted...who will be the bearer-away of the prize? The away-bearer...the one who bears the er, bear...my words are breaking. It's a grizzly spectacle.
