Bonus Mystery Spot

Dusty D is trying like heck to peer at the background details of this drawing, which appeared in a 1996 edition of the papers. It shows Easter morning as folks leaves church. I was convinced it was the St. Luke's Episcopal on Huron, but I actually checked and either didn't see or missed this perspective. I could have sworn I've seen those little buttressy things on a church wall somewhere. There's also a building in the background. Dusty D is stumped!

  1. 1996? Did you mean 1896?

Is it maybe the (Lutheran?) church on River St south of Depot Town? It does look very familiar, but that's my best quick guess.

  2. Maybe the Methodist Church on Washington Street.

  3. My first guess was Emmanuel Lutheran too, but according to the history on their website the current building was started in 1922 and finished in 1923

A picture of the previous church used until 1923, at Michigan Ave. and Grove Rd. where Kluck's Drive-In is now located, is on page 1 of their history

  4. I think it might be First Congregational Church, at Adams and Emmet. That one has the buttress-like features

  5. Oops, thanks cmadler--yes, 1896, sorry.

Some good suggestions here for the Lutheran church on River, the Methodist on Washington (I wondered about this one too), the *previous* Emmanuel Lutheran, and First Congregational.

I have 2 deadlines tomorrow, but I should have time Tues to scoot out and investigate these leads; thanks to al!

  6. I am quite familiar with the Methodist Church building (was building and business manager there for several years) and I can ruke it out.

It never had those features, even before the education unit was added in 1953.

  7. Ah, that is helpful--thanks, Richard!

It just nags on me a bit because I could swear I've seen those buttress-y walls somethere in town.

  8. I think you're right on the St. Lukes guess. Given all the different additions in different era's, that perspective wouldn't be valid any longer, but it does look like that (although the bushes have gotten quite tall and cover some details).

  9. Hm, I didn't think to look behind the bushes! Also, welcome to the blog, DBD!

  10. My first impression is that this is simply a generic illustration. Is there proof that it was done by a local artist? Could it just as easily have come from Ann Arbor, Detroit, or New York? Granted, they didn't have clip art as we know it, but especially given the lack of detail in the church sign, it strikes me that this *isn't* Ypsilanti.

  11. I think BF is correct. My post re: Emmanuel Lutheran was to highlight the time frame discrepancy between the picture and the building's construction.
