The Toad Survey of 1910
The state's annual Frog and Toad Survey is gearing up. It's fairly amazing: thousands of volunteers across the state monitor wetlands 3 times in early spring, late spring, and summer to get a handle on the densities of frogs and toads (anurans) since they are important ecological indicators. And just plain cool. Dusty D learned a lot about Michigan frogs and toads for this article...the highlight was learning the "seven oxen" factoid. Lowlight was probably learning that bullfrogs are quite cheerfully cannibalistic, blecch. I also learned, via watching endless videos of calling frogs, that I've heard bullfrogs, Green frogs (boating on the Huron), and Western Chorus frogs and of course spring peepers. All in all it was a fun article about animals I have a great fondness for. Here's the story.
