Love all that fancy brickwork: the diamonds, the terraced column, the protruding "frame" at left.
I have a theory that this building may be on top of the original Sauk trail. Behind it is the transformers that I've been told is where the old trading post was. Wouldn't they have put the trading post in a place imediatly on the trail? Was this an alley left over from that time before the city built the building? Does this seem plausible?
You are spot-on; this used to be a little alley, between the onetime Edison building (on left) and the building to the right of the little police station. It is said that Michigan Ave. was the route of the old Sauk Trail and that, as you say, the trading post was just a bit to the north of it roughly where the transformers were or between there and opposite Pearl St.
